What to expect on your Jordaan Tour?
On our 1.5-hour English city tour through Amsterdam’s most famous district, you will learn more about the history of the former working-class district, which has become the hippest area of the city center in recent decades.
Your English-speaking guide will take you to all the important sights that the Jordaan has to offer. Pause for a moment as you pass the venerable Westerkerk church and the Anne Frank House.
Listen intently as your guide tells you the story of the 400-year-old canal belt, which has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2010, and find out where you can get the best apple pie in Amsterdam – by far, we’ve tried.
Read more about the Jordaan Tour
The name Jordaan has its origins in the French word for garden (“jardin”). This is why many streets in this district are named after plants, flowers and trees.
The peaceful, idyllic atmosphere in the Jordaan is also enhanced by the many “Hofjes”: small courtyards whose hidden entrances are easily overlooked. They are a real oasis in the middle of the hustle and bustle of the city center.
After a short break in one of the little courtyards, you can learn more about the tulip mania that took hold of Amsterdam during the 17th century on the picturesque Prinsengracht canal.
From rags to riches – Amsterdam edition
Until the 1980s, the Jordaan was an area that was largely avoided – the more modest people lived here and it was not always the tidiest neighborhood.
Today, the Jordaan is an upmarket residential area where many young families live alongside the long-established “Jordanese” (that’s how the people from this area are called). Despite its radical transformation, the neighborhood has remained true to its origins and the 17th century alleyways still exude a very special, enchanting atmosphere.
The district’s own culture is still cultivated – with its own dialect, folk songs and traditions. We will be happy to introduce you to the many special features of this unique district during your Jordaan walk.
The Jordaan is teeming with nice cafés, great restaurants and special galleries. Every Saturday the ‘Noordermarkt’ takes place in the Jordaan, which in our opinion is the most beautiful weekly market in Amsterdam. If your tour takes place on a Saturday, we will walk through the Noordermarkt together.
Your English-speaking guide will be happy to take you on a relaxed and informative walk during which you will get to know the Jordaan from a local’s perspective.
Curious to explore more of Amsterdam?
Another great addition to your Jordaan tour is our Bike Tour Noord, which takes you along old fishermen’s cottages and through small garden towns. All Incredible Amsterdam city tours are conducted in English, in small groups and can be booked as private tours.
We are looking forward to hearing from you!
