What to expect on your Van Gogh Museum Tour?
Explore the treasures of the Van Gogh Museum with an experienced English-speaking guide. The 1.5-hour tour of the Van Gogh Museum takes you through the creative history of the famous artist and focuses on important works.
The ‘Sunflowers’, ‘The Potato Eaters’ or the ‘Almond Blossoms’ – Vincent van Gogh’s paintings and his incomparable impressionist style are known worldwide. Only few people realise just how turbulent his artistic development unfolded.

Your guide will place the most important works in a historical context and tell you in a lively and varied way how van Gogh’s mental illness shaped the history of his work.
Floor by floor, you will see how van Gogh’s painting style and technique changed over time and how he composed colour gradients differently.
The Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam is home to the world’s most extensive collection of his works: more than 200 paintings, 500 drawings and 700 letters in total.
Your museum tour will therefore give you a comprehensive picture of the creative phases of the genius Vincent van Gogh.
Genius or poor fellow: Vincent van Gogh
He himself was unable to profit from the unrivalled radiance of his work: In contrast to artists such as Rembrandt, who was already doing well in business during his lifetime, van Gogh only sold a single painting in the course of his entire life. Arguably, his real fame arose after his death.
During your guided tour, you will discover the man behind Vincent van Gogh’s paintings. You will find out how much Japanese art and his stay in Provence influenced him and marvel at his incredible creative drive towards the end of his short life.
Van Gogh in the context of his time
Your museum tour will not only allow you to experience Vincent van Gogh’s landscapes, self-portraits and still lifes, but will also give you the opportunity to compare his paintings with works by other 19th century artists. These are both artists who inspired van Gogh and artists who were inspired by him.
In recent years, the Van Gogh Museum has organised major exhibitions of masterpieces by Van Gogh’s colleagues such as Gauguin, Munch, Malevich, Kandinsky and Vallotton. The Van Gogh Museum was expanded in 1999 and completely renovated in 2013 so that the works and the story of Van Gogh’s life can be shown to their best advantage.
