Art & Culture: Current exhibitions in Amsterdam

Rate this post

Our beautiful Amsterdam is not only the city of seafaring, picturesque canals and crooked houses, but also of small and large arts. Few cities in the Netherlands place as much emphasis on a diverse range of art and culture as our capital. With over 75 museums, there is something for everyone: from art lovers and historians to street art fans. Especially now in autumn, Amsterdam can impress with all kinds of new artistic treasures. We have brought together the best current exhibitions in Amsterdam in one post so that you don’t have to search through all the pages individually. So off to Amsterdam and into the exhibition of your choice!

The Pokémon exhibition at the Van Gogh Museum

Whether you’ve been totally swept away by the Pokémon hype or are already fed up with it: The whole of Amsterdam is in the grip of Pokémon fever. To mark the 50th anniversary of the Van Gogh Museum, the Japanese brand Pokémon and the museum have joined forces. Anyone wondering how the cute figures fit in with Van Gogh’s important art should definitely come on a tour of the museum! Tip: Van Gogh was a big fan of Japan…

In addition to the special Pokémon exhibition, you can of course also use your admission ticket to look around the museum as normal and follow in Van Gogh’s footsteps. A visit is therefore doubly worthwhile, as you can kill two birds with one stone (at no extra charge, by the way 😁).

Note: The coveted Pikachu collector’s card is no longer available in the museum as of this week due to security concerns.

Space exhibition at the Fabrique des Lumières

If you prefer to experience art instead of just looking at it, the Fabrique des Lumières is just the place for you. Since April 2022, the old factory building in Westerpark has been home to impressive light installations that allow viewers to experience works of art and moving exhibitions from a completely new perspective. A particularly impressive exhibition can currently be found there: the space exhibition “Destination Cosmos”. Anyone who thinks “Isn’t space something for children?” – we have to kindly disagree ;). “Destination Cosmos” not only deals with simple astrophysical phenomena, but also goes into more technical depth – all using impressive images that are projected into the room. A clear recommendation!

Colourful Keith Haring at the Stedelijk Museum

When we talk about current exhibitions in Amsterdam, a world-famous artist is of course not to be missed. If you’re lucky, you can still admire the colourful works of the pop artist in our modern Stedelijk Museum for 2 weeks. Keith Haring made a name for himself in the 1980s, when he quickly made a name for himself in the USA and worldwide with his colourful, expressive style (including graffiti). This exhibition is therefore perfect for anyone interested in contemporary art. However, the catchy graffiti style means that even laypeople can quickly recognise the message the artist wanted to send out. Above all, Haring campaigned for the rights of the LGBTQ+ community and tried to raise awareness about HIV, among other things. His works are therefore as colourful as they are profound.

In addition to the Keith Haring exhibition, you can visit the entire Stedelijk Museum with your admission ticket. Once again a great opportunity to combine a general visit to the museum with a special exhibition.
