Sightseeing is fun, but can be quite exhausting. Treat yourself to a little breather in between – now is the time for really good coffee in Amsterdam!

Amsterdam is teeming with hip coffee hotspots and small cafés – please don’t confuse them with coffee shops (they only sell plants there 😉). Did you know that it was the Dutch who brought coffee to Europe in the 17th century? At this point: Thank you, dear Dutch! But where can you get the best coffee in Amsterdam? Whether black coffee, espresso or milky “Koffie Verkeerd”: in our 6 favourite cafés and roasteries, the coffee bean is still prepared with a lot of love. And of course there’s free wifi everywhere.

Canal belt: Caffè Il Momento

Caffè Il Momento is hidden away in a crooked canal house right on the Singel canal at the widest bridge in Amsterdam. As you can already guess, real coffee lovers are in for a true moment(o) of pleasure here. The coffee here is legendary and the beans are roasted freshly every day in Amsterdam!
Caffè Il Momento sources its coffee from Lot Sixty One, a superstar among Amsterdam’s coffee roasters. Inside the café, the natural stone wall and the enchanting, antique tap where you can fill up your water bottle make you feel like you’re in an (admittedly miniature) piazza in Italy. And that in the centre of Amsterdam. It’s only natural that we girls and boys from Amsterdamliebe like to pop in for a coffee – even outside of our cultural food tour. The delicious beans are also available to take away, for a little piece of Amsterdam in your home.

Canal belt: Back to Black

Further south in the canal belt, tucked away in a small, pleasant residential neighbourhood, you can enjoy wonderfully fragrant coffee in the cosy corner café Back to Black. Here you can flatter the baristas with your knowledge of Dutch (of course, the guys and girls at Back to Black can also speak English. But because it’s so nice: “voor mij graag een lekker koffie, alsjeblieft” (i.e. “I’d like a tasty coffee, please”)). Not many tourists make their way here, even though the café is only a coffee bean’s throw away from the Rijksmuseum. So after our Rijksmuseum tour, Back to Black is perfect for a well-earned afternoon coffee after all the impressive Dutch art of the Golden Age.

9 Straatjes: Screaming Beans

Screaming Beans is the latest trend among hipster cafés in the heart of Amsterdam. Located in the centre of the “9 Straatjes”, there is a huge selection of coffee here – from Aeropress to Cortado to Y50, and of course with soy or oat milk. You can round off your coffee experience with a daily changing selection of homemade patisserie and delicious sandwiches. Perfect if you want to enjoy a little refreshment during your shopping tour in the “9 Straatjes”. The owners of Screaming Beans roast their own coffee. They source the coffee beans directly from small coffee farmers in Ethiopia, Brazil, Guatemala, Tanzania and Uganda. The house coffee from Ethiopia bears the mysterious name “Whisper” – delicious!

Centrum: Bocca Coffee Kerkstraat

Bocca offers coffee with heart. As a “speciality roastery”, they oversee the entire process from growing the coffee beans to the steaming cup of coffee itself. Fair trade is also a top priority at Bocca. As coffee roasters, they take responsibility for people and the environment.
With seven “all year round” roasts and varying specials that are perfectly matched to the respective seasons, Bocca captures the heart of every coffee lover. Whether fruity, nutty or chocolaty: Coffee connoisseurs will get their taste here. The barista team also helps non-experts to find the right coffee for a real flavour explosion.

The location is kept very clean, without a lot of frills. The focus here is clearly on the delicious coffee. If you are feeling peckish, you will find a selection of sweet and savoury delicacies.

De Pijp: Scandinavian Embassy

Scandinavians drink the most coffee in the world – it’s only logical that they know a thing or two about the brown brew.
The Scandinavian Embassy in de Pijp is no exception: everything here revolves around Scandinavian roasts. You’ll find high-quality coffee from Sweden, Norway and Denmark, which you can enjoy here in a cosy atmosphere. You will also be spoilt with delicious Scandinavian specialities. Each of these specialities harmonises perfectly with one of the many different coffee roasts. We think that’s great! For all those with a sweet tooth, we recommend the delicious Swedish cinnamon buns, fresh from the oven!

Oud-West: Trakteren Koffie

Trakteren Koffie is a rather inconspicuous café that you would simply walk past if you didn’t know it. Not only does it have an incredibly likeable name (“Kaffee donieren”), but also damn good coffee, which is served by none other than the two owners themselves.

Trakteren even has a little bear motif in the coffee.

These guys definitely know how to make coffee lovers’ hearts beat faster: The hand-brewed filter coffee here is an absolute flavour experience and they are masters of latte art. In addition to the in-house roast, you can always try a coffee of the month, hand-picked by the owners and roasted and ground exclusively for Trakteren Koffie. Friends of good flavour take note: Every first Sunday of the month, an espresso tasting takes place here in the café. Cost: 10 euros. True coffee lovers should not miss out on this.
