A short stroll around the market is also a great way to get to know the different neighbourhoods and their individual flair. So head to the best markets in Amsterdam and discover the vibrant culture of our beautiful capital.

1) Ij – Hallen (Amsterdam Noord)
The Ij-Hallen are a true institution for both Amsterdammers and tourists. Every weekend, the imposing NDSM shipyard in Amsterdam’s hip north is transformed into the largest flea market in Europe (!). For an entrance fee of €5, you can rummage to your heart’s content. You really can find everything at the flea market: from furniture to clothes and lovingly crafted jewellery to genuine retro finds. You’ll also be in one of the coolest settings in the city: the north is known for its street art. You can explore it at your own pace for free. A visit is therefore doubly worthwhile!
Where: Amsterdam Noord, NDSM shipyard
When: once a month from 9:00 – 16:00 (please check their website for the exact dates)

2) Noordermarkt (centre)
If you’re interested in sustainability, the Noordermarkt is the place to be. As Amsterdam’s first organic market, the Noordermarkt offers a variety of local delicacies – from traditional Dutch kaas to cider and delicious jam! Head to the heart of the lively Jordaan neighbourhood, for example after a great Jordaan tour, and experience what Amsterdam’s Noordermarkt has to offer.
Where: In the heart of the chic Jordaan neighbourhood, right next to the Noorderkerk
When: Every Saturday from 9:00 – 16:00

You can only get them at the market!
3) Albert Cuypmarkt (De Pijp)
The Albert Cuypmarkt in the heart of the trendy “de Pijp” neighbourhood is definitely worth a stroll. The neighbourhood is known above all for its cute little bars on every corner, cool vintage shops and genuine Amsterdam flair. There are fewer tourists and more locals here – so experience a truly authentic Amsterdam! At the market, you will not only find the best stroopwafels in the city, but also all kinds of vintage clothing, accessories, electronics and the odd antique.
Where: In the Albert Cuypstraat in the centre of De Pijp
When: Daily (except Sundays) from 9:30 am – 5:00 pm

4) Waterlooplein market (centre)
If you want to experience some Amsterdam history, you should pay a visit to the Waterlooplein in the heart of the Jewish neighbourhood (for example after an Anne Frank tour, as it ends here). This market is the oldest in Amsterdam (dating back to 1883) and specialises mainly in clothing, leather goods and antiques.
Incidentally, the word flea market is not derived from fleas, which were definitely around at the time, but from a false tradition of the former term for the small markets. The origin of flea markets lies in the water. The so-called “flea markets” (Vleoiendmarkten) of the time were often opened on rivers and then moved on. Over the centuries, however, fließend has mistakenly developed into flea, which is why the flea markets bear this strange name today.

On other days, you can find everything from flowers and textiles to chic jewellery. So every day is a real surprise, which is why it’s one of the best markets in Amsterdam!
