Once you’ve crossed the river IJ by ferry, the cycle tour can really begin: You cycle through the up-and-coming neighbourhood of Amsterdam Noord towards the most beautiful polder landscape in Holland. Along the way, you will learn how the Dutch have defied rising sea levels for centuries and how much of the Dutch land was literally reclaimed from the water.

You cycle at a pleasant pace through increasingly rural surroundings until you leave Amsterdam behind you and reach the Zaanstreek. It is the oldest industrial area in the country and is now home to the Zaanse Schans, a partly inhabited open-air museum with eight well-preserved original windmills from the 17th and 18th centuries.

Another highlight on your cycle tour to the Zaanse Schans is a visit to a traditional shoemaker’s shop. Here you will gain an insight into the processes of a clog factory where the typical clogs are produced. You will also have the opportunity to stop by a cheese dairy and a cooperage to learn more about traditional Dutch craftsmanship. And before you head back, there is still some time to take advantage of this unique backdrop for a few great souvenir photos.

Important information regarding the Zaanse Schans Bike Tour
Our cycle tour to the Zaanse Schans is a day trip and takes place in small groups of a maximum of 12 participants. If your group is larger, we will divide you among several tour guides. Please remember to wear comfortable clothing and bring a water bottle and sun protection.
The tour takes place in all weather conditions – rain or sunshine. To be on the safe side, always take rain protection and a jumper against strong winds. On hot days, always remember to bring sunglasses and a sun hat.

We are meeting outside the MacBike bike garage, Oosterdokskade 63A. You can recognise your guide by the red name tag he or she is wearing. The tour will also end here again.

Loved it This tour was more interesting than I expected. The guide explained a lot about Dutch history and how the land was reclaimed from the water while we cycled through the polder landscape. At Zaanse Schans we also visited a clog workshop which was fun to see.

Zaanse Schans My partner and I booked this during our trip to Amsterdam and it ended up being one of our favorite days. The countryside ride was really pretty and peaceful. We stopped for photos near the windmills and visited a small cheese shop which was sooo delicious.
